Exning Remembers "The Battle of The Somme" July 1, 2016

July 1, 1916 was the start of the Battle of the Somme, one of the major battles in WWI.

The Exning branch of the Royal British Legion recognised the centenary of the event and especially  the 9 villagers who died.

On the morning of Friday July 1, 2016  a wreath was laid at the Exning War Memorial, followed by 2 minutes silence until at 7.30am the actual time that whistles blew, men left their trenches and walked towards enemy under heavy gun fire. That day saw many casualties and in all over the ensuing losses on both sides numbered over a million dead.

Below are photos of the wreath laying in Exning

On Sunday July 3, 2016, during the 11am service at St Martin's Church, there will be a short period of remembrance which will include a short reading about the battle, and the reading of the names of the 9 who made the ultimate sacrifice.
